Moving with a fixed date: planning moving day
The key handover is scheduled or the rental contract is ending — the date is set. The step-by-step plan to get there without stress.
Many moves have a hard anchor: the key transfer at the notary, the end of the rental contract or the handover of a new-build. Start at that date and count backwards. Request quotes as soon as the date is known and mention it in your request — moving companies see immediately whether your day fits their schedule and only respond if it does. If your date falls around the end of the month, know that this is the busiest time: whoever books early or has a few days of slack keeps the most choice.
Then work towards moving day in rings. Weeks ahead: cancellations, address changes and the question of what comes along — moving is the natural moment to declutter. The final week: pack per room, label boxes and keep a 'first-night box' aside with bedding, chargers and coffee gear. The complete move itself is usually done in a single day for a regular home.
Also check the practical side of both addresses: can the van park at the door, is there a lift, will the sofa make the turn in the stairwell? For an upper floor without a lift or a narrow staircase, a furniture lift (€ 150 to € 350 per half-day) is often faster and safer than carrying through the stairwell — and around the end of the month just as sought-after as the moving van itself, so book in time.
If the old and new home don't line up seamlessly, that need not break your date: many moving companies store the contents temporarily (€ 50 to € 150 per month) and deliver as soon as the new address is ready. What the whole comes to, you see per service in the price index — compare on the total of the parts you actually need.
